The lotus and the surface
A lotus moves through cloudy water before reaching the surface. The image matters not because it asks us to become perfect, but because it reminds us that the conditions we begin in do not have to define every gesture that follows.
For a person, blooming may mean making something already present more visible: a preference, a thought, a boundary or a personal way of inhabiting the world. It need not be dramatic; it often starts quietly.
Between adapting and hiding
Adaptability is useful. It lets us live with others, enter different settings and find shared language. Tension appears when adapting becomes a constant surrender of what we feel, until even we struggle to recognise ourselves.
Sometimes we hide out of caution, fear of judgement or reluctance to disturb an existing balance. Noticing that movement without condemning it is already an act of honesty.
Being seen without judgement
An encounter can change how we view a part of ourselves. When someone listens without trying to correct us, what we kept hidden can feel less burdensome and more simply human.
Being seen does not automatically remove every hesitation. It may, however, reveal a relationship in which we do not have to perform. That experience leaves a question: where else might I allow a little more truth?
Small experiments in honesty
Authenticity does not require telling everyone everything. It can be selective, considerate and gradual. Stating a preference instead of answering automatically, asking for time before deciding or naming a boundary are small, concrete experiments.
After each gesture we can notice what happened: what we feared, what actually occurred and what we might repeat or alter. This is not a way to measure our worth, but to know ourselves more precisely.
Blooming is not a finish line
There is no final version of ourselves that removes all doubt once reached. Self-expression is a process that shifts with relationships, seasons and what we learn.
Courage can therefore be modest: making one gesture today that is slightly more faithful to what we feel, without asking it to transform life overnight. The lotus, too, emerges a little at a time.
